Cozumel

Cozumel liegt vor der Ostküste Yucatans, 18km Luftlinie von Playa del Carmen entfernt, mit 44 km Länge (Nord-Süd) und 18 km Breite (Ost-West) grösste Insel Mexikos. Die kürzeste Entfernung zum Festland beträgt 14km. Direkt gegenüber der Insel auf dem Festland befindet sich die Stadt Playa del Carmen. An der Westküste Cozumels befindet sich die Hauptstadt San Miguel (die einzige Ortschaft auf der Insel).
 
Wegen der vielen schönen Strände, der berühmten Korallenriffe und der guten touristischen Infrastruktur steht Cozumel in Konkurrenz zum nahen Cancûn. Da alles - ausser frischem Fisch - vom Festland zur Insel herübergebracht werden muss, sind die Preise ca. 30 Prozent höher als in anderen mexikanischen Karibikorten.

Geschichte

In der Sprache der Maya heisst Cozumel "Ah-Cuzamil-Peten", die "Insel der Schwalben". Vor der Ankunft der Spanier hatten der Kult des Gottes Quetzalcoatl oder Kukulkan (gefiederte Schlange) aus dem Zentralmexikanischen Hochland kommend auch Cozumel erreicht. Auch war Cozumel ein Wallfahrtsort, zu dem vor allem die Frauen pilgerten, um der Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Ixc hel zu huldigen, der Tochter des Sonnengottes Itzaman. Während der Kolonialzeit war die Insel vor allem Piratenunterschlupf, bis die Bevölkerung die Piraten zu Anfang des 10. Jahrhunderts endgültig vertrieb. u dieser Zeit hatte Cozumel etwa 10 000 Einwohner, heute sind es ca. 80 000.

Wie auch auf dem Festland, gibt es hier archäologische Ausgrabungsstätten, von denen San Gervasion am besten erhalten geblieben ist und sich im Zentrum des nördlichen Teils der Insel befindet. Die anderen Ruinenstätten mit Namen El Cedral liegt im Süden; von diesem wohl ältesten Maya Bauwerk der Insel ist allerdings nur wenig erhalten.

Fehrkehrsmittel auf der Insel

Es gibt keine Linienbusse (ausser in San Miguel). Man fährt Taxi. Jeder Taxifahrer führt eine Preisliste mit sich. Es sind Fixpreise. Wenn mehr als zwei Personen mitfahren erhöht sich der Preis pro Person ein wenig.
Die Preise für Mietautos sind relativ hoch. Für die Inselbesichtigung sollte man sich einen Jeep mieten.
Kleinroller und Mopeds sind beliebt aber leider nicht ungefährlich, da oft recht rücksichtslos gefahren wird und die Strassen teilweise eng sind.

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Chankaanab
botanischer Garten und Unterwasserpark. Er liegt ca. 9 km südlich vom Zentrum.
Hier trifft man auf unzählige Leguane in allen grössen. Ein Restaurant, Schliessfächer, Schnorchel- und Tauchausrüstungsverleih, Duschen, Liegestühle und Sonnenschirme sind vorhanden. Die Unterwasserwelt lässt einem fast den Atem stocken.
Die Attraktion in der Süsswasserlagune sind die Kalksteinfelsen und das mit Höhlen durchsetzte Ufer. Es bietet hervorragenden Schnorchelmöglichkeiten inmitten exotischer Fischschwärme. Ein Tauchermuseum zeigt Bilder und Fundstücke der Unterwasserwelt Cozumels.
Achtung: nur biologisch abbaubare Sonnencreme erlaubt!

San Gervasio, die bedeutendste archälogische Zone der Insel, die der Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Ixchel gewidmet ist.

Cozumel itself was a sleepy little fishing community until 1961, when a Frenchman by the name of Jacques Cousteau declared us one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas of the world. Since that time Cozumel has become an underwater marine park to protect the delicate balance of it's dazzling coral reefs and abundant variety of tropical fish. The underwater wildlife is absolutely amazing here & due to the clarity of the water ( 100 - 200 ft visibility,depending on the season ), you do not have to be a diver to enjoy it.
Simply put on a mask & snorkle and jump in & you will feel like you have been dropped into a tropical fish tank !!
In addition to the spectacular open water diving, the region of Cozumel and Akumal are well-known for the underground rivers that honycomb the porous limestone of the Yucatan which provide some of the most beautiful cave and cavern or "cenote" diving in the world. Many of these caves are highly decorated and are like floating through the finest dry cave you have ever seen, simply filled with water that is as clear as air. Because they are supported and protected by their water filled enviornment, they are pristine and each has its own particular marine life, unique to a cave environment.

Absolutely magnificent dive, gentle currents, lush plant & marine life and you never run out of reef. Perfect for beginners. (best at 40-70')

Horseshoe ( N )
Georgous and easy dive. Massive corals tower overhead as you explore the unique "horseshoe" shaped structure of the reef. (multilevel 30-60-90')

Palancar Caves ( N )
Canyons, tunnels & swimthrus. Better than average chance of seeing turtles or eagle rays in these southerly deeper dive sites. Facinating dive. (best at 60-90')

Columbia Reef ( I to A )
Coral overhangs tower over an impressive drop-off. Tends to have larger marine life, look for turtles & rays. (best 60-100')

Punta Sur ( A )
Incredible pinnacles of coral, very dramatic drop-off, watch for turtles, rays & sharks. Currents can be strong & unpredictable.

There are many other reefs that are not listed here.Your dive operator can best advise you regarding their suitability for your level of skill. They can be extremely aggressive & demanding dives and we would not recommend attempting them without a knowledgeable local dive master or insrtuctor.
